The death of the Albanian in England, the sister of the 27-year-old speaks: Now
Leonard Farruk

The British media have returned attention to the tragic case of the loss of life on the hotel ship of the Albanian immigrant Leonard Farruku on December 12 of last year.

His sister has said that the family is experiencing a "double tragedy" as they are unable to afford the costs of returning his body to Albania.

Leonard Farruk was found dead on board the accommodation ship in Portland Port, Dorset, on 12 December. An inquest opened by Dorset coroner Rachael Griffin heard that a post-mortem examination revealed he had died by hanging.

"It was a tragedy that we lost a brother in such circumstances, but now we are facing a double tragedy of not being able to bring his body back home to perform the funeral," his sister said.

A hearing last month was told there were no suspicious circumstances and the case was adjourned for a full hearing at a later date.

Farruk's family have now set up a GoFundMe page to raise £10,000 to repatriate the 27-year-old's body, which remains at a Dorset mortuary. By Monday afternoon, the campaign had raised £550.

His sister, Jola Dushku, told the PA news agency through a friend: It was a tragedy that we lost a brother in such circumstances, but now we are facing a double tragedy, as we cannot bring his body home for perform the funeral ceremony. We don't know how long it will take for the money to be collected.

She added in a statement on the fundraising page: Our brother Leonard Farruk's life ended in an unimaginable way for all of us while he was in the UK. As has been widely reported in the UK media, Leonard died inside the barge Bibby. An investigation has been opened into the circumstances of his death. Leonard's body has been in Dorset Mortuary since his death on 12th December 2023. We are asking for help to raise funds for Leonard's body to be returned from the UK to his homeland in Albania to rest in peace. With thanks and appreciation. Jola, Leonard's sister.

Home Secretary James Cleverly previously said Farruk's sudden death would be "fully investigated".

The Daily Telegraph, which first reported the name of the deceased, stated that he paid 4,000 euros to cross the English Channel in a small boat to reach the country.

Dushku, who lives in Lombardy in Italy, told the newspaper: When I spoke to him last time, he told me that the conditions on that boat were not bad, but they were treated like animals by the guards.

An impact assessment, which found the policy of housing asylum seekers on the Bibby Stockholm ship discriminated on the basis of age and gender, was deleted from the government's website last month, two days after it was published. A note on the website said the impact assessment had been "erroneously published".

The assessment found that the policy of housing up to 500 single men on the barge was directly discriminatory in relation to age and gender because the barge was only suitable for men aged 18 to 65. The assessment argued that the greater need to accommodate male asylum seekers within that age range in accommodation other than hotels justified age and gender discrimination.
