Two people died and three others were injured last night, after the shooting on "Rue de l'Argonne", on the terrace of a cafe near the "Midi" station, in Belgium.
The Brussels Public Prosecutor's Office confirmed today that the incident took place around 1:00 am in a cafe on "Rue de l'Argonne". Some of the victims of Wednesday night's shooting are believed to be accidental victims of a suspected drug-laundering shooting.
The perpetrators traveled on a scooter, according to a source familiar with the Belgian news agency. Initial police inquiries suggest they were targeting the cafe rather than individual customers. The high death toll makes it one of the deadliest shootings in recent years.
The police have not yet arrested and the motives of the perpetrators are not yet known to the investigators. However, it appears to be drug related. So far only the scooter has been found.
The victims are known to be a 44-year-old man and a 46-year-old woman, they were sitting on the terrace of the Astoria cafe near the Brussels-Midi station around 01:00 when the attack happened. Three others were injured. The men, aged 42 and 49 respectively, suffered serious gunshot wounds.
They were transferred to hospital in critical condition. Their lives are still in danger. A fifth male victim, 31, whose life was not in danger, was also taken to hospital for treatment.
At the end of April this year, a restaurant on the Rue de l'Argonne, which was thought to be a front for a drug distribution operation, had already been targeted as part of an alleged money laundering operation. The perpetrators had first shot at her before returning to burn her.
In 2023, seven people are killed by drug violence in the Belgian capital. 130 others were injured (seriously). Very often, these episodes of violence occur between rival gangs fighting for their territory to distribute drugs.
