Criminalistics expert Ervin Karamuço on how Albanians have managed to become drug 'bosses' in Latin America. He said that Albanians have managed to penetrate beyond the European market towards the Latin American one with the help of Italians.
According to Karamuço, there are over 3,000 people operating there. He also said that Albanians are also involved in another 'business', that of human trafficking to the US. The expert said that there are some Albanians from Kosovo and North Macedonia operating in several camps in Mexico.
"We started in the early 90s. We did experiments with heroin from the Eastern line. But because most of the immigrants were in Italy, especially the large families of the Camorra or the 'Ndrangheta, they were oriented towards the cocaine market. This market started from the ports to take control and then they crossed the Atlantic because they gained trust. That's how they grew. At first they had the role of distributors, then over the years they grew and got rich. They got permission from the Italians. With the permission of the Italians they also went to Latin America. We see that Italian-Albanian cooperation led these people to Latin America. They are not yet independent. Even when they go, they meet with the cartels that enter into trade and bargaining, they have a person who calls them in advance.
It seems like there are only about 3,000 or so people moving from Ecuador to Colombia. Even in Bolivia. Even Brazil has a part. We have Albanians in Brazil who are barely mentioned there. We also have them in Mexico because people who have been there see human trafficking. This work is coming out now. These organized groups linked to cartels and because of their exchanges that they do not only with Europe but also with America, this is a novelty. We also organize trafficking lines in cooperation with cartels towards North America, which has led us to have a secondary activity for entire corridors that until yesterday have functioned very well for human trafficking from Europe to North America. They make them fake passports, take the money, and bring them into the US.
