Details have emerged from the incident in Divjaka where 25-year-old Xhesion Toromeni stabbed 32-year-old Besmir Kumria to death, after a fight over an irrigation canal.
Xhesion Toromeni had only returned to the red-haired village of Divjaka a few days ago, after living in Italy for 7 years. At midnight on Tuesday, he went to the village bar where Besmir Kumria was staying with his friends.
Without saying a word, Toromeni got out of the car with a knife in his hand and fatally attacked his fellow villager. The victim did not recognize the perpetrator, while the latter stabbed him twice in the abdomen.
The 32-year-old tried to leave, but after a few meters he fell to the ground dead, while the perpetrator drove away in his vehicle, in cold blood.
Three hours later, in an attempt to flee towards Fier, the killer answered a call from police officers, telling them his location.
During the arrest, he told the police that Besmir had slapped his father two years ago.
The conflict between the Kumria and Toromeni families in Kryekuq, Divjaka, is old and started over the irrigation of agricultural plots with water from the irrigation canal. Two years ago, this was the motive declared by the family members at the Divjaka police station, where they ended up in a physical conflict between them.
Sources from this police station said that the conflict was known to the police and that two years ago, members of both families were criminally prosecuted.
The homes of the perpetrator's family and the victim's are separated only by the road to the village of Krjekuq. In addition to being neighbors, the Toromeni and Kumria families are also related by marriage.
The conflict over land and water developed between older family members, while the younger members, both the perpetrator and the victim, lived and worked far from their hometown.
Besmir Kumria worked as an electrician in the Himara area together with his brother, while his killer had not set foot in Kryekuq for 7 years.
The latter arrived a few days ago for reasons that are still unclear, but sources close to his relatives quote the young man as saying: " I haven't been able to sleep since two years ago when they slapped my father."
Police are questioning witnesses and members of the two families to document the event, circumstances, and motive.
The fellow villager of the Kumria and Toromoni families says that the cause of the conflict between the two families is land.
Previously, the Fier police have filed two charges against the 25-year-old, "premeditated murder" and "unauthorized possession of cold weapons." Meanwhile, the police are continuing their investigations into the incident.
