An episode of unprecedented violence shook Genoa in August 2021. A 75-year-old Italian woman became the victim of a shocking attack by a young man who, after harassing her on the bus, followed her home, punched her in the face, and raped her.
The perpetrator, a young Albanian man 20 years old at the time of the incident, then fled and disappeared for years.
Thanks to the investigations carried out by the Genoa Carabinieri, the perpetrator was identified immediately after the attack. The Genoa Court of Appeal ultimately sentenced him to six years in prison for sexual violence, theft and wounding.
However, before he could be arrested, the young man had disappeared, escaping the execution of his sentence.
The wanted man was in Fier, Albania, where he had been hiding for some time. Italian authorities, through international cooperation, issued a European arrest warrant. Albanian police then carried out the arrest.
The 23-year-old will now have to serve his sentence for the serious crimes he committed and procedures will be initiated for his transfer to Italy.
