National Police and Customs Surveillance agents seized over 1000 kilograms of cocaine in a container that had arrived at the port of Vigo, while 9 people were arrested. The arrested are of Serbian and Albanian nationality.
According to informed sources familiar with the investigation, the operation took place on Wednesday and the drugs were seized on the ship Cape Citius, anchored in Guixar, which sails under the flag of Cyprus and came from Ecuador.
The involvement of the ship's crew and owners has been excluded from the investigations. In fact, at 17:00 the freighter left the dock. The ship headed for Malaga.
The arrests were made in the Vialia shopping center, where the customers who were shopping were shocked by the operation of policemen in civilian clothes.
Sources close to the investigation consider that we are in front of a historic operation that dismantles an important cartel in the Balkans.
For his part, the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, who this Thursday inaugurated in Tui (Pontevedra) the new headquarters of the Police and Customs Cooperation Center (QKPA), said that there was an "important anti-drug operation" .
"Let them continue the development of the investigation and complete the operation. It showed the professionalism and ability of our bodies and security forces to deal with a problem such as criminal organizations and, in this case, those dedicated to drug trafficking" , he noted.
The nine arrested, who are in Vigo National Police Station, will appear in court from Friday to Saturday and are of Serbian and Albanian origin.
