Italian-Albanian cocaine gang dismantled, 5 Albanians among 12 arrested; names

Italian media report that the Italian-Albanian criminal group was headed by two brothers from the Çela clan in Elbasan.

The State Police has participated in an operation initiated by the Italian authorities, to destroy a criminal group that was trafficking cocaine with vehicles from South America to sell in Italy and Central European countries.

As part of the international police mega-operation "ICARO.AL", initiated by the Italian authorities, the Albanian State Police, in cooperation with the Guardia di Finanza, SPAK, and international partner agencies, has discovered and detained several individuals involved in a criminal network that trafficked cocaine from South America to Italy and Central European countries.

It is learned that so far 12 people have been arrested, while 8 others are under investigation. It is learned that 5 people have been arrested in Albania, with the aim of their extradition to Italy: Igli Dervishi, 30 years old, resident of Elbasan; Shkëlqim Pashja, 44 years old, resident of Elbasan; Ervin Dema, 40 years old, resident of Elbasan; Edmond Zhuja , 41 years old, resident of Shkodër; Genti Berisha, 28 years old, resident of Tirana.

Italian media reports that the Italian-Albanian criminal group was headed by two brothers from the Çela clan in Elbasan. According to them, they led the operations of importing and trading narcotics and collecting the proceeds, which were sent to Albania, using the cooperation of bus drivers operating the Brescia-Elbasan line.

The investigation began in the second half of 2020, following the identification of cocaine distribution activity in entertainment venues on Lake Garda, Italy. In 2021, one of the suspects was caught with 350 kg of cocaine, which led to the reconstruction of an Italian-Albanian criminal network.

The drugs were imported from South America via modified vehicles and distributed to Italy and Europe. To secure drug supplies, the brothers from the Cela clan traveled to Colombia, Ecuador and Dubai, establishing contacts with major cocaine suppliers.

"So far, 12 citizens have been arrested as part of this mega-operation and 8 others are being investigated. 5 Albanian citizens, accused of being members of the group, have been located in Albania and arrested for extradition purposes," the police statement said.

Information provided by the Albanian Police enabled the arrest in Spain of another member of the group, Gerardo Pashja alias Astrit Pashja, 48 years old, with a criminal record.

According to the blue uniforms, citizen MM, 28 years old, has been identified and declared wanted, who is also wanted for other criminal offenses.

The criminal group used modified vehicles to hide the narcotics and trafficked them to cities in Italy and Central European countries. Their activity included a wide cocaine distribution network in Europe.

"These citizens are accused by the Court of Brescia, Italy, of having organized as a group, trafficked the narcotic substance Cocaine from South America, through vehicles modified to conceal the narcotic substance and sold it in cities in Italy and in Central European countries. Interpol Tirana is cooperating with its counterparts to finalize the extraditions of the arrested citizens," the police further announced.

The mega-operation initiated by the Italian authorities, to destroy a criminal group that was trafficking cocaine in vehicles from South America to sell in Italy and Central European countries.

So far, 12 citizens have been arrested as part of this mega-operation and 8 others are being investigated.

Five Albanian citizens, accused of being members of the group, are located in Albania and arrested for extradition purposes.

Further, information provided by the Albanian Police enabled the capture in Spain of another member of the group, also a citizen with a criminal record.

1 Albanian citizen, currently wanted for other criminal offenses, is identified and declared wanted for the same charge.

As part of the mega-operation "ICARO.AL", the Structures for the Investigation of Organized Crime at the DPPSH, those of the Tirana and Elbasan Local Police Directorates, the Directorate of the Special Operational Force, the National Security Force Tirana Unit, as well as the Guardia di Finanza, in cooperation with SPAK, arrested the following citizens:

D., 30 years old, resident of Elbasan;
Sh. P., 44 years old, resident of Elbasan;

D., 40 years old, resident of Elbasan;
Zh., 41 years old, resident of Shkodër;
B., 28 years old, resident of Tirana.
Further, as a result of the provision of information by the Albanian Police structures, and its exchange with Spanish counterparts, the Albanian citizen with a criminal record, GP alias AP, 48 years old, was arrested in Spain.

Also, during the development of this mega-operation, in Albania, citizen MM, 28 years old, was identified and declared wanted, who is also wanted for other criminal offenses.

In coordination with partners, work is underway to locate and arrest this citizen.

These citizens are accused by the Court of Brescia, Italy, of having organized as a group, trafficked the narcotic drug Cocaine from South America, through vehicles modified to conceal the narcotic substance, and sold it in cities in Italy and in Central European countries.

Interpol Tirana is cooperating with counterparts to finalize the extraditions of the arrested citizens. The procedural materials were passed to SPAK for further action.
