An anti-drug operation carried out in Ecuador has led to the arrest of 17 people, part of a criminal organization linked to international drug trafficking in the Americas. Among those arrested are on-duty police officers who were also part of the organization.

The criminal group is said to be linked to the Chone Killers gang, one of the most dangerous in Ecuador. Ecuadorian Interior Minister John Reimberg reported that four people were also arrested in Spain.

The operations were carried out simultaneously in Guayaquil, Durán and Quito, as part of a massive operation coordinated by national security forces.

According to authorities, the people involved were running a drug smuggling scheme in Spain, hiding cocaine in shipments of pitahaya (a type of fruit) flown in by plane from Guayaquil Airport.

The investigation began on August 14, 2024, when 165 kilograms of cocaine were seized in an airship containing pitahaya in Madrid, Spain.

The Spanish Unit Against Drugs and Organized Crime (UDYCO) immediately launched an operation and captured an Argentine, a Spaniard and two Albanians, who were responsible for the logistics and storage of the cocaine.

The investigation revealed that the organization used companies dedicated to the trade of pitahaya, passion fruit, and naranjilla to contaminate its drug cargo.

Furthermore, the group gained control of the logistics chain for these shipments at José Joaquín de Olmedo Airport by recruiting customs officials and cargo security and control companies.
