Two Albanians have been arrested by the British police after being caught inside a "cannabis farm". British media reports that Damiano Behari, 25, and Eneo Guri, 27, were found living inside a factory in Collwall Street, Darnall.
They were spotted after police cut down the shutters at the front of the warehouse on the morning of December 5, 2023.
During the hearing Prosecutor Stephanie Hollis told Sheffield Crown Court on February 20 that the two defendants had tried to run away before being arrested by officers at the scene.
Prosecutor Hollis also described how a very large amount of cannabis was found by officers inside the warehouse.
A total of 600 plants were found inside the premises, some of which reached up to 91 cm in height. The plants were estimated to be worth between £252,000 and £350,000.
She added that it was clear that the quantity of cannabis was intended for sale.
Electricity had been stolen, monitors were found inside the premises connected to security cameras outside, there was a filtration system and "high intensity" lighting to help the crops grow.
Damiano Behari's defense lawyer said that his client had left Albania "for his own safety" as he owed 50,000 euros for medical treatment for his sick family, an argument often used by Albanian immigrants there. After arriving in the UK in the back of a lorry, Damiano had started a fake relationship with a girl on Instagram.
When Damiano met him he realized he had been set up and he was "kidnapped" and taken to Sheffield six days before his arrest. West described the living conditions inside the factory as "grim" and "miserable". But Damiano felt that he could not leave "for fear of the consequences".
