Two Albanians who were caught red-handed when they went to retrieve 4.2 million euros of cocaine hidden in a refrigerated container, loaded off a ferry in Co Cork, Ireland in August 2023, have each been sentenced to eight years in prison.
They are Gentjan Dodaj, 39, and his brother, Donatel Dodaj, 30, both Albanian nationals with an address in Paradise Row, Athlone, Co Westmeath, and 23-year-old Romanian Daniel Afedoaei of Slí an Aifreann, Athlone .
At Cork County Criminal Court, father-of-three Gentjan Dodaj said he was involved in the cocaine-trafficking scheme to pay off huge invoice debts from the car business he ran.
He recruited his younger brother Donateli, who said he was 60,000 euros in debt to an Albanian in his homeland, while Daniel Afedoaei had a debt of 50,000 euros.
However, the prosecutors reasoned that they were previously involved in a money laundering scheme where large amounts of "cash" were also seized, which shows that they were not hostage to any economic difficulties.
They were caught in August 2023 while trying to retrieve a 60 kilogram load of cocaine from the container.
