The investigation into the murder of 49-year-old Jani Aliaj inside the infamous "Koridhalo" prison in Greece has taken a new turn.
Greek authorities have raised strong suspicions that the perpetrator of the crime may be Juliano Halili, 44, from Tepelena, sentenced to life imprisonment.
According to investigative sources, Halili was in the same sector as the victim and in the cell next to him. He was injured during the incident, which has increased suspicions that he was directly involved in the murder.
Initially, responsibility for the crime was claimed by a Greek prisoner, 27-year-old Christos Vardhuniotis, who surrendered to the police, declaring himself the perpetrator. However, authorities have noted that there are no signs of a struggle on his body, while the only one physically injured at the scene was Juliano Halili.
Sources close to the investigation indicate that within the prison community, rumors have been circulating since the first hours after the incident that Halili is the real perpetrator, while the Greek prisoner is suspected of being paid or threatened to take the blame. This information has prompted the Greek police to deepen their investigations and revise the initial version of the incident.
Meanwhile, other sources indicate that Jani Aliaj had been mentioned for years in investigative files as a person suspected of involvement in the clashes of the so-called "Greek Mafia", although these suspicions were never officially proven.
Juliano Halili, also known by the nickname "Niko", is considered one of the most dangerous figures in the underworld in Greece. He has been sentenced to life imprisonment for several contract killings. In 2011, in Kalamata, he is accused of killing Fillim Mesajan and his minor son, a crime ordered to settle scores by Greek criminal Vasilis Varelas.
In 2018, Halili escaped from the Port of Piraeus during a transfer to prison, but was captured a few hours later. In June 2024, inside the same Koridhalos prison, he killed Alfons Ndoc and injured another prisoner, an event that was allegedly ordered from abroad.
Greek authorities are continuing investigations to fully clarify the circumstances of the murder of Jani Aliaj and to determine the true perpetrator of the crime.
