
A 57-year-old man who was serving a sentence in Berati prison died during an operation in the Tirana Senate.
Valerio (Vasillaq) Gërxhi was serving his sentence in Berat Prison, when his health condition worsened. He was urgently sent to the Hospital of Berat and then to the Senate of Tirana.
It is learned that the prisoner was suffering from lung disease and died in the operating room during the surgical intervention.
Valerio (Vasillaq) Gërxhi was sentenced to 10 years in prison by the Court of Milan in Italy for "Production and sale of narcotics and the Italian criminal decision was recognized in Albania, where the Court of Appeal sentenced him to 5 years in prison, which then were added to 7 years in prison by a decision taken by the Supreme Court.
Sources from IEVP Berat indicate that in the last year the prisoner had many health problems and was receiving medical treatment.
The same sources confirm that due to health problems, he had also requested bail, but his request was not taken into account.
