Albanian criminal groups appear on the scene after the dismantling of the Ghost application. The head of the Italian mafia, Giovanni Parlangeli, part of the "Sacra Corona Unita" mafia group, the fourth most powerful mafia in Italy after the 'Ndrangheta, the Camorra and the Cosa Nostra, has also been captured. Albanian mafia groups had close ties with Parlangel for drug trafficking.

A new app used by female criminals, "Ghost", was taken down by Australian authorities in an operation led by the FBI.

The investigation showed that not only in Sky Ecc and Encro Chat, but Albanians have coordinated criminal activity in this application as well.

According to data published by the media, organized crime in Albania had close ties with the Italian mafia, but also with exponents in Canada.

An Italian mob boss, Giovanni Parlangeli was jailed after the Ghost app was cracked. He was arrested in a house in Lecce, a province in Southeast Italy, while at the time of the raid he tried to escape from the police forces.

According to Sunday World, it is said that the Albanian criminal groups had close ties with the Italian mafia, which was part of the mafia group "Sacra Corona Unita", which is known as the fourth and most powerful mafia in Italy after the Ndrangheta, Camorra and Cosa Nostra.

He is one of the dozens of people arrested, while his capture has been described by the European police as "very important" and "fundamental" for the fight against drug trafficking on the continent.

In recent years, the "Sacra Corona Unita" mafia, to which Parlangeli is also a member, has established strong ties with criminal organizations in Albania involved in drug trafficking in Europe.

The mafia group is believed to be using Albania as a distribution point to traffic drugs to Central Europe.

Also, Albanian criminal groups appear in another episode.

From the analyzed conversations, it appears that a 36-year-old man from Victoria, Canada, who was handcuffed during the Kraken operation, in cooperation with exponents of crime in Albania, trafficked a quantity of cannabis worth 1.2 million dollars.

The crackdown on the Ghost app led to a crackdown on criminal groups and dozens of arrests, 51 in Australia, 11 in Ireland, one in Canada and Italian mobster Parlangeli linked to the Sacra Corona Unit mafia. The latter was wanted since May 2023, after the Court of Lecce had imposed a prison sentence against him, for a fine of 60 thousand euros against a local entrepreneur.

What is Ghost App?

The market for encrypted chat apps is booming, with WhatsApp being the most well-known and popular service. These apps encrypt messages to prevent strangers from reading private conversations between users. But several features of the Ghost service, which first appeared on the scene in 2021, made it much more attractive to criminals, according to Europol.

Users would buy a customized phone instead of simply downloading an app from an online provider.

Users could get Ghost without providing any personal information or an existing phone number, making it 100% anonymous.

The service used three separate encryption standards, and users could remotely "self-destruct" all messages if, for example, the phone fell into the hands of the authorities.

Europol said Ghost used "hidden" servers in Iceland and France, its founder was in Australia and the money trail led to the United States. / Pamphlet
