French magazine article on Dua Lipa: Pop's diplomatic weapon

The prestigious French magazine Le Point has dedicated a long and detailed article to the world-famous singer, Dua Lipa, describing her as a "pop diplomatic weapon" who has made Kosovo known in the international arena.

In the article, Le Point highlights that the phenomenon Dua Lipa continues to leave its mark on the global music scene, while emphasizing the fact that she honors the countries that shaped her identity and they, in turn, honor her. This summer, Kosovo officially granted citizenship to the singer, in a ceremony held on August 1, 2025 in Pristina, a day after the decree was signed by President Vjosa Osmani.

This citizenship is the third for the London-born artist, after the British and Albanian ones, which she received earlier in 2022 for her contribution to the promotion of Albanian culture in the world.

According to Le Point, this is a symbolic gesture that strengthens her long-standing connection with her family's country of origin. President Osmani described Dua Lipa as one of the most emblematic cultural figures in Kosovo's history, while Kosovar musician Genc Salihu called her "the general prosecutor of the struggle for emancipation", describing her as the greatest source of pride for young Kosovars.

The article also mentions the singer's early life, with her parents fleeing Kosovo in the 1990s due to war, and her return to London at the age of 15 to pursue her musical dream. However, the connection to Kosovo remained inseparable and strong.

Le Point points out that while Kosovo remains one of the poorest countries in Europe and still faces a lack of recognition from some states, its cultural influence is growing thanks to diaspora figures such as Dua Lipa and Rita Ora. With over 88 million followers on Instagram and 65 million monthly listeners on Spotify, its fame transcends the borders and population of its own country of origin.

The article also recalls the 2020 controversy when Lipa shared a map of “Greater Albania” on social media, an act that was interpreted by some as nationalist, but which she defended as an expression of cultural pride.

Through initiatives such as the Sunny Hill festival, which she co-founded with her father, Dukagjin Lipa, Dua has brought Kosovo to international attention not only as a place of modern music, but also as a destination for youth culture and creativity. The festival has become one of the largest music events in the region, attracting major artists and visitors from all over the world.

In conclusion, Le Point places Dua Lipa's success in the same vein as the "Korean Wave" (Hallyu) phenomenon, which made South Korea a global cultural power. According to the magazine, the pop star has managed to become the strongest ambassador of a small Balkan country on the global map.
