The 2025 Nobel Prizes have been awarded to three scientists. Mary E. Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell and Shimon Sakaguchi received the Nobel Prize in Medicine for their revolutionary discoveries "regarding peripheral immune tolerance."
The Nobel Committee announced that the prize was awarded for their work in understanding how the immune system protects the body from self-damage, preventing it from attacking the body's own healthy tissues.
The discoveries of these three researchers have helped to clarify the fundamental mechanisms behind autoimmune diseases, as well as paved the way for the development of new therapies in the treatment of these diseases.
