Renowned political scientist Ermal Hasimja has reacted to the rumor of his name being mentioned as a possible non-political candidate who could represent the opposition in the by-elections for the municipality of Tirana.
Invited to the show "Log." on News24, Hasimja explained that he himself was surprised by the seriousness with which his name was taken in the opposition's discussions about a new figure for the race in the capital.
" 48 hours ago, I didn't even know, even though I had heard my name mentioned. Did I have any ambition or desire? Yes, I have already shown it. In 2005 and later in 2015, we wanted to do something with a public impact. We have resolved personal matters, I am not someone who deals with tenders or theft ," said Hasimja.
The political scientist emphasized that it is not a matter of ego or arrogance, but he wants to first understand the vision the opposition has for Tirana and what it expects from him as a potential candidate.
" The first thing I said when I found out that my name was being taken seriously was: what do these people want from me? Or what connects them to me? If they think we should clean up the administration by removing all socialists from work, that's not what I believe in. Or if they think we should divide the tenders differently, that's still not my vision ," he said.
Hasimja stated that she does not yet have a concrete program, but as a citizen she has clear ideas about Tirana's challenges, strongly criticizing the way the capital has been managed in recent years.
" Tirana today has turned into a money laundering and tower block construction site. It is not managed for the citizens, but for the interests of a group of people who do not care about this city ," he added.
He also added that any opposition candidate will find it difficult to conduct a quality campaign, given the short deadline until the elections, but stressed that he will not take any step without clarifying the vision and expectations of those who propose his name.
" I'm waiting to understand if the idea that the opposition has matches what I think about Tirana. I'm not from the DP, I'm neither the property of the DP nor its creature. What I've done I created myself. If I were to get involved in this, only if the majority of the opposition is behind this, if they would agree with me on some ideas for Tirana. If the idea is let's do something different from these, I'm not going to get involved ," he said.
