Accused of corruption and money laundering, SPAK interrogates Sali Berisha today
Sali Berisha

The Special Court of First Instance for Corruption and Organized Crime has decided to summon former Prime Minister Sali Berisha to a special session today.

Through an announcement, this court made it known that based on Article 248 point 1 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, it has scheduled a court session for questioning the person under investigation, Sali Berisha.

"The Special Court of First Instance for Corruption and Organized Crime, on 24.10.2023, Tuesday, at 2:00 p.m., has scheduled the hearing of the interrogation of the person under investigation Sali Berisha, based on Article 248 point 1 of K.Pr.Penale", the announcement states.

In the security measure verification session, the person under investigation, Sali Berisha, will have to be in the session. However, it remains to be seen whether the former prime minister will appear in court or will continue not to take this notice as a basis, with the argument that the security measure assigned to him is anti-Constitutional.

Meanwhile, on Monday afternoon, officers of the Judicial Police were in the palace of the former Prime Minister Sali Berisha, where, as is known, they delivered the court's notice for the appointment of the measure and the summoning of the interrogation session.

Currently, Berisha is under mandatory appearance and cannot leave the country in connection with the privatization file of the former Partizani complex.

He is accused of "passive corruption in cooperation" as well as "money laundering".

According to SPAK, the former prime minister with concrete actions influenced the adoption of laws or by-laws which were adapted to the demands of 5 owners, among whom the beneficiary was his son-in-law, Jamarbër Malltezi.

Meanwhile, Malltezi is suspected of having committed the criminal offense of "Passive corruption of high state officials or local elected officials", committed in cooperation with Berisha, since in agreement with the latter, using the power of the former prime minister, he managed to obtain irregular benefits.

Beirsha himself has called the handcuffing of his son-in-law, Jamarbër Malltez, and the accusations that are weighing on him "complete fiction".

The former prime minister said yesterday evening that he was at home reading when he heard the news after being informed by some of his friends.

"I found out, they informed me. They had a long time, not having any facts, documents, they had not announced him as a person under investigation and now that they have arrested him, they have not arrested him as accused of a criminal offense, they have arrested him as a person under investigation. And what did they do? From time to time, to put pressure on me, they called journalists paid by them and told you that Abi Malltezi will be arrested. You have the arrest warrant ready, but these did not make any impression on me, as neither did what I heard," Berisha said./ Pamphlet
