Silvio Gonzato and Edi Rama

The EU ambassador in Tirana, Silvio Gonzato, has made it clear to the Rama government that in order to enter the union, Albania must fight corruption resolutely.

In an activity held by the Ministry of Justice, for the Reform in Justice and the fight against corruption, Ambassador Gonzato says that the results in the fight against corruption are a condition for Albania's European journey.

Gonzato says that our country will have the support of the European Union, while emphasizing that corruption must be fought, as it is also a reason why young people leave.

"Corruption is a consequence of criminal activities and affects the security of our countries, this deepens inequalities and damages the trust of the population in the governments. It makes the youth go away. Our job is to reestablish that trust. The fight against corruption is essential to create a better life. The results in the fight against corruption are important to move forward in the integration process, these efforts must be visible and known, everyone must see that crime is punished. In order to solve the challenges we have within the EU, the EC has received a package against the fight against corruption. Corruption remains everywhere and we must be vigilant," said Gonzato.

According to him, the results against corruption should be visible and concrete in Albania, but also in the entire Western Balkans region. In his speech, Ambassador Gonzato said that the legal framework should be strengthened and institutions with high integrity should be established.

"In the Western Balkans, they must continue the fight against corruption with determination and courage, with concrete initiatives to strengthen the legal framework and financial resources to establish institutions with high integrity. Efforts must be visible and concrete. The prevention and enforcement of order should be very important, because this has to do with the important reforms that Albania has made. We take into account the work that has been done with a great support from the EU to have a 2024-2030 strategy, which will be a legal framework to identify corruption, tax administration, customs, public procurement", said the ambassador.
The EU has provided nearly 100 million euros in support for the fight against corruption in Albania, said Gonzato, while emphasizing that a strong political initiative is needed to move it forward.

"The fight against corruption will meet resistance from those people who have their own hidden interests, therefore a strong political initiative is needed which must be continuous. The EU has provided technical support for the part of corruption prevention, this is an investment of nearly 100 million euros, an important framework to discuss the various efforts in the fight against corruption", said Gonzato.
