Eric Wendt, nominated by President Donald Trump as US ambassador extraordinary to Albania, is expected to face a vote in the session of the Foreign Relations Committee in the US Senate, where the date on which the retired general will officially take office will be finally decided.
The hearing with some of the names nominated by Trump for ambassadors to various countries of the world will be held on June 4, at 10:00, local time. Referring to the Committee's agenda, Eric Wendt is 6th on the list. This is the last link of control available to American institutions, before a nominee goes to a vote in the Senate, which also marks the end of the procedures.

The June 4 hearing is considered the final test that the candidate for ambassador to Albania has with the institutions of the Senate, although it seems like a formal procedure. If the Senate approves Wendt's candidacy in a vote, then it remains to be determined the date when he will officially come to Albania to take up the role of Ambassador, a position currently covered by Chargé d'Affaires Nancy VanHorn.
At the May 20 hearing, Wendt outlined his priorities as ambassador, if confirmed in office, while emphasizing the support he would provide to SPAK in cracking down on organized crime and corruption.
"SPAK, from everything I have read and from my previous visits to Albania, even though I have not had direct contact with them, as I have collaborated more with the army and ordinary citizens, turns out to be a very valuable institution. It has been apolitical and independent. Prosecutors who become part of SPAK go through a very careful verification process, which also includes a polygraph test. They are supervised by the International Monitoring Operation, which includes Europeans and Americans.
They have their own investigative body through the National Bureau of Investigation, BKH. They also have the Special Prosecutor's Office and special courts. All of these are defined in Article 148 of the Constitution of Albania.
Therefore, if confirmed, I can fully commit to supporting their continued independent and apolitical operation. You also mentioned the international criminal organizations they are operating against. From everything I have read, their work has been extremely valuable. The exchange of information with American law enforcement agencies in Tirana, with the Department of Justice, the FBI and the DEA, has been uninterrupted and transparent.
I have been told, and I have also read, that this has led to criminal proceedings against criminal elements in the United States and American cities, as well as recently the seizure of several tons of cocaine coming from Paraguay.
"So, to sum up, I think their work in these areas is essential, as long as they remain apolitical and independent. I also believe that this positively impacts American business opportunities, contract law enforcement, tender security and transparency, and helps create a more level playing field for American businesses in Albania," Wendt declared in the May 20 session.
Lieutenant General Eric Wendt was born on October 7, 1964, in Berkeley, California. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Law and Society and a Master of Science degree in National Security Affairs from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California.
Wendt has served as an active duty Army officer since 1986. He served nearly five years in the Infantry and has since served as a Green Beret, Special Forces Officer since 1991.
Wendt has served in Indonesia as Team Leader for the Commander of U.S. Pacific Command, Pacific Situation Assessment Team, in Operation Enduring Freedom-Philippine in Mindanao in the southern Philippines, on two tours of duty in Operation Iraqi Freedom and in Operation Enduring Freedom-Afghanistan. / Pamphlet /
