Rama described food security as the biggest challenge for EU integration.
Prime Minister Edi Rama participated in a meeting with food business operators to discuss food safety and the obligations arising from the European Union membership process.
During this meeting, Rama stated that over 900 entities in the country risk being excluded from the market if they do not meet food standards. He described food safety as the biggest challenge for EU integration.
He stressed that the EU group that has monitored the production and collection points of animal products and by-products has left a series of tasks for the entities.
"The EU has brought a delegation of experts who have seen the production and collection points of animal products. And they have left a series of tasks, for which we, through the Inspectorate, will have to interact with 900 entities in the territory and which have a very clear risk, but not all of them one or two, today in the conditions that are of course that among them there are some that with little can meet the standards and the majority must do more, the risk of closure and exclusion from the food establishment market from the day of accession. So this requires awareness, information", he said.
Rama emphasized that the membership process is a "double-edged sword" for entrepreneurship, presenting it as a clear division between those who adapt and those who remain outside the market.
"What awaits entrepreneurship with this accession process is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, a new horizon of opportunities for those who will be prepared and on the other hand, an abyss of bankruptcy for those who will not be prepared. Considering the most sensitive part, which is the safety of animal products, and all by-products, we must make it clear to all those who are engaged, or invested even in a small dairy, that tomorrow will be fatal if they do not understand today where they are in relation to the standards and what they need to do to be ready tomorrow ," said Rama.
He further added that they are in dialogue with the EC to extend the deadlines for meeting conditions related to food safety beyond the moment of the country's accession.
"I read and hear that the negotiation process is not a negotiation process but a process where we take orders and carry out orders and nothing else. This is what people who have no idea say. The negotiation process is a process for things for which we need a little more time and one of the things is what is related to the field of food safety. For this reason, we and the EC are negotiating for an extension beyond the moment of membership of the deadlines when the standards must be 100 percent as stated in EU legislation. But also taking into account that we can manage to negotiate a 5-year plus, from today to 3035, if in 2030 we will be a member. This is a very short time to prepare" , Rama added.
