At the end of the April 17 protest, where several MPs were injured and 11 protesters were escorted to the police station, Democratic Party leader Sali Berisha declared that the citizens' response to the police in the next protest will be proportional. Asked about these statements, on Off the Record, MP Luan Baçi hinted that the next protest could escalate into civil clashes.
"No one is going to sing or dance at the protest. I don't know where it can go. I'm sorry, but it's not the citizens' responsibility where it can go," he replied when asked if it could lead to a civil conflict.
According to him, the civic revolt is at a high level and the protest is in their hands, while the police, according to Baci, should guarantee order and peace and not protect the prime minister's building.
"The citizens are the ones who decide and the Democratic Party, which organizes and leads the protest alongside them, in their presence, often plays only the role of calming the situation, of calming the protesters. They are revolting, they are angry because they are farmers who are on the verge of bankruptcy, they are students who do not have the right conditions to continue their studies, they are small businesses that are on the verge of bankruptcy due to taxes, they are unemployed, they are parents whose children have run away abroad. So their revolt is at the highest level. Then the Democratic Party or the deputies of the Democratic Party do not have to stop their revolt, but they should join this revolt and there is no need for us to say what will be done in the protest.
"I don't know what can be done in a protest. It's in the hands of the citizens. The power is in the hands of the citizens, the protesters. The police have the obligation to guarantee order, peace, to guarantee the citizens, the protesters. The police are not there to protect the prime minister's building because they can't find anything at all since the prime minister fled, but they are there to protect the citizens who are protesting. Those citizens who are protesting there are taxpayers who also pay the salaries and bonuses of the police, which the leaders apparently receive in large amounts in the case of protests," he said on Off the Record.
Bringing attention to the recent opposition protest, he accused the police of using violence against citizens, which according to Baci is done with the intention of instilling fear. In these conditions, he reinforces the leader of the Democrat Party's idea of a proportional response to law enforcement.
"The more harshly they behave, the more arrests they make, the more statistics they have on the police stations and they keep them until 2:00 or 3:00 in the morning. In the next protest until 2:00 in the morning, two protesters who had been caught on the street and had no connection at all and were released, were released that day when we went at 2:00 in the morning. But why do you keep those protesters inside until 2:00 in the morning and take them out on the street to verify them?
Police state. Definitely to instill fear, definitely to stop you from participating in the protest, definitely blackmail and pressure, definitely to scare your parents, to scare your neighbors, to scare others that they will keep you inside for a day, two, three, like these protesters have been holding today and it will be expected that when they come out in an unimaginable way, you can keep them inside there and accuse them of things they did not do. So, seen from this perspective, I think that definitely the response of the citizens should be in direct proportion to what the police do, which are overwhelmingly patronizing."
