The President of the Republic, Bajram Begaj, received today the President of Latvia, Edgars Rinkēvičs.
His visit to Tirana follows that of President Begaj in Riga last year, which was the first state visit by a President of Albania to the three Baltic countries.
As heads of state in NATO, Presidents Begaj and Rinkēvičs addressed today's sensitive issues in the field of security and defense, at a time when Russian provocations have intensified with violations of the airspace of several states.
"Russia continues its acts of provocation with repeated air violations in several NATO member countries, such as Poland, Estonia, Denmark and Romania, which makes us more determined and united in the Alliance to confront and end not only these provocations, but also the war," Begaj said.
Also, during the meeting, political, economic and trade relations between the two countries, Albania's membership in the EU, the situation in the Western Balkans, and the Baltic region were discussed.
" We also exchanged valuable opinions on the latest developments in the world, Europe and especially in our regions of the Western Balkans and the Baltics. We condemn Russia's military aggression against Ukraine. Both our countries have maintained an unwavering stance and today we emphasized full support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine ," said Begaj.
President Begaj praised the close security cooperation, highlighting Latvia’s contribution through troops in KFOR in Kosovo, as well as Albanian troops to NATO’s forward presence at “Camp Ādaži” in Latvia. The two presidents shared a common position on security concerns, including Russian aggression, hybrid threats, and cooperation on cybersecurity, misinformation and disinformation, within the frameworks of NATO and the EU.
The meeting also reaffirmed the commitment to the enlargement of the European Union to the Western Balkans. The President of the Republic conveyed to his counterpart Rinkēvičs his gratitude for Latvia's support in the European membership process, expressing that he has high expectations from the Latvian Presidency of the EU in 2028, at a time when Albania has pledged to close negotiations in 2027 and become a member of the Union in 2030.
