Prime Minister Edi Rama continues to acknowledge that the Fredi Beleri issue has created difficulties in relations between Albania and Greece, but stressed that the dialogue between the two countries continues in a spirit of respect and cooperation.
Asked about relations with his Greek counterpart Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Rama stated that tensions have not affected communication between the parties. According to him, both leaders are committed to not allowing disagreements to dominate bilateral relations.
He underlined that there is a shared ambition for all open issues between the two countries to be resolved within this year, aiming for a conclusion of the processes by next fall.
The Beleri issue has been one of the most sensitive points in Albania-Greece relations, bringing political and diplomatic reactions from both sides. However, Rama stressed that the cooperation has not started from scratch, but is ongoing.
"The Beleri issue created some difficulties in our relationship, there is no doubt, but we have always been respectful and open with each other, without making a fuss. I respect him a lot for that. We decided a long time ago that we should not let our countries be consumed by these kinds of quarrels. We must once and for all resolve all the issues that exist between us. Our ambition is to finish within this year and next autumn to finish all the issues. We have a great asset for us, the Greek minority and something that is an asset for you, the Albanians who live here and are integrated.
"I don't expect a restart, we have restarted. We expect an end at the end of the year, we both hope. I'm trying to be careful not to joke with you because I don't want to disturb this environment," the prime minister said.
