Yesterday marked 14 years since the "January 21" massacre and the same hypocrisy continued. Socialists placed bouquets of flowers at the memorial plaques, while the prime minister continued with the old slogan that justice is needed for the 4 killed. The only one who has so far exposed this hypocrisy is Ben Blushi. In 2016, he gave a strong speech in Parliament, 5 years after the January 21 massacre. Today we are reviving his speech.
I am shocked today by what I heard about January 21st and I think about how I would defend myself if I had to defend myself for one or several murders. What was said today was that power is not taken with violence and that power should not be taken with violence, it must be defended with weapons. I say it is different. Power is defended with weapons when it is attacked with weapons. On January 21st, 2011, this did not happen. Power was not attacked with weapons and there was no need to defend itself with weapons. However, those who defend themselves today about January 21st say that power is defended with weapons. But the question is who says this? Who says that power is not taken with weapons? Are they angels who came out of the books of world democracy and descended to parliament to moralize us? Are they pacifists, Buddhists, Gandhians, Rugovaists, are they Chinese monks or Albanian Catholic priests who were raped in their wickedness? No, they are Albanian politicians. In the last 20 years, I have witnessed gunfire on the boulevard twice. The first time I was inside the Prime Minister's Office and the second time outside the Prime Minister's Office. The first time was September 14, 1998 and the second time was January 21, 2011.
Me mirë zyrat bosh apo arkivolet bosh? Unë i pyes sot çfarë ishte kjo? A u sulmua qeveria me armë në 14 shtator 1998? Me kë jeni ju sot?
On January 21, you killed. On September 14, you attempted to kill. If you do not depart from the canonical norm, you will kill again because no one among you, and this surprises me, has stood up to say that on September 14 and on January 21, in both cases you were on the wrong side of history. What surprises me is how no one among you can make this difference. Oppose us for taxes, for concessions for education, for corruption, for order and for healthcare, but do not take up arms to convince us that you are right. On that day you will be a party liberated from the canon and protected by the law. This is the issue. By not admitting that you killed when you should not have, you killed Ziver, Hekuran, Aleks and Faiku twice. But it is not only that and this damage that you have done to the reactionary body in this country is several times greater. You have raised suspicions that in this country the government kills you if you oppose it. This fear is not felt by a German today, not by a Greek, not by a Macedonian, not by a Bulgarian, not by a Turk, but certainly by an Albanian. Because of January 21. Those four were killed for no reason, but have you asked yourself what they would do if they were alive? I think I know. They are no longer there, but the reasons why they went out to protest are there. If they had not fled into exile, Ziveri, Faiku Aleksi and Hekurani could have gone out again to protest against poverty, corruption and concessions. It cannot be that they were killed. If those four were alive, they could have taken to the streets again against corruption and concessions.
They can't come out because they were killed. They could go out again in protest with their student children against the higher education law. They can't come out because they were killed. They could go out in protest because they were drowned every year, because they didn't receive the proper services, because they couldn't build, because they couldn't pay for medicine with their pensions and their wonderful salaries, but they can't come out. Do you know why? Because they are killed, burned and drowned in the ground. They are no more. And with them the protest spirit of this country which since January 21 has been suppressed, weakened, terrified, abandoned, raped and lynched. Those four are no more. Because they were killed. Albania didn't just lose four men, it lost the strength to oppose and this is even more serious than the murder of four men. In this sense, I say that January 21 is not just what we say. It is not a murder. On January 21, 2011, we reduced the number of opponents of every government, of every misery and of every abuse. By killing them, you have turned January 21 into an ally of every government. Because on January 21, governments won over the people, and that is why I think that we do not want this justice for January 21, unfortunately. Because people cannot win the courts with governments. At least not in Albania yet.
