US sanctions close Serbia's only refinery, Vučić faces the most dangerous energy crisis in the region...
Aleksandar Vučić, the man who maneuvers between East and West with the skill of a political equilibrist, has finally fallen into the trap he himself built: Serbia's only refinery, owned by the Russian-controlled NIS company, has stopped operating due to American sanctions.
The lack of a license to import crude oil has left the refinery in "warm circulation", while the country faces an imminent supply crisis.
Vučić, in an emotional and tense speech, warned that Washington's decision does not bring "anything good," citing the risk to the country's entire energy and logistics system. But what he did not say is his direct responsibility for this situation: for years, he has allowed a strategic infrastructure like NIS to remain in the hands of Russian interests, rejecting energy diversification and real independence from Moscow.
Now, behind the closed doors of the refinery, lies the shadow of an alliance with Russia that is costing Serbia not only economically, but also diplomatically. The crisis that began in Pancevo is not just a Serbian issue. It is a wake-up call for the entire Western Balkans. Energy supplies, prices and stability are in question, while old alliances are burning with the same oil that once promised security.
Vučić can no longer play both sides. The time for maneuvers is over. The oil has started to burn and with it, the myth of his stability./ Pamphlet
