Former Prime Minister Sali Berisha has continued his tour with the "Foltore" in Mirdita, where he has articulated serious accusations against the government and Prime Minister Edi Rama himself for systematic and deliberate discrimination against the north of the country. In a meeting with citizens and supporters in this historically anti-communist area, Berisha criticized not only the government's economic disregard for Mirdita, but also the open corruption in the south, specifically in the municipality of Tepelena.
Taking cue from a media investigation published a few days ago, Berisha said that the sister of the mayor of Tepelena, Tërmet Peçi, has benefited together with his relatives over 60 million euros from public tenders. According to him, this amount exceeds the total amount of investments that have been given to all northern municipalities in the last four years. “I guarantee you that all northern municipalities taken together have not received 60 million euros from this government. Meanwhile, only one family in the south receives it through tenders with letters in their pockets,” Berisha said.
In his speech, the former prime minister called this situation a hostile and criminal distribution of public wealth, where the north, which really contributes to the gross domestic product, is completely excluded from investments and development. He mentioned projects left in the middle such as the Arbri Road and the pronounced lack of support for areas such as Mirdita, Kukësi, Tropoja and Dibra. “The Arbri Road dragged on for 14 years for only 27 kilometers, while in Tepelena tenders flow at the speed of water in the Vjosa”, – Berisha ironically.
But more than just a budget differentiation, Berisha gave his statement a heavy political tone, describing Edi Rama as the “genetic enemy of the north,” an ideological line that, according to him, stems from the Enverist mentality. “Enver Hoxha shot and imprisoned thousands of Mirditërs for their anti-communist manliness, but he never despised the north so openly as Rama. He stops time for Shkodra, Peshkopi, and Tropoja, while rewarding his clientele in the south with millions,” he said.
Berisha's statements come at a time when tension between the government and the opposition is growing, while allegations of corruption related to public tenders and domestic abuse in the municipality have increased significantly. If verified, the figures mentioned would constitute another serious scandal in the long list of abuses of public funds that accompany the current government.
