American media: Rama, NATO ally or partner of the international drug mafia?
A shocking article published by the Washington Examiner has targeted Albania and Prime Minister Edi Rama himself, directly linking it to the illicit activities of one of the most notorious drug cartels in the world: Mexico's Sinaloa cartel. The question that is directly asked is: Why did the Trump administration tolerate a NATO ally that, according to US intelligence officials, is acting as a money laundering partner for Mexican drug cartels?
The article highlights that, although Donald Trump has declared the war on drugs as one of his top priorities, part of this war is being deliberately ignored when it comes to “nominal allies” like Albania. It clearly states that, under the leadership of Edi Rama, Albania has become the European capital of drug trafficking, with the Albanian mafia controlling key markets in London, Western Europe and beyond.
According to the Washington Examiner , these criminal networks are not just dealing in cocaine. They are also involved in arms trafficking, prostitution rings, and money laundering through formally legal businesses. Most worryingly, they use extreme violence to dominate the market and intimidate law enforcement, which in many cases appears powerless or compromised.
The American newspaper refers to multiple intelligence and security sources in the US, who claim that Rama has not only allowed these activities, but is a direct beneficiary of them. At worst, the article says, Rama is following the same model as Maduro in Venezuela: a political enabler of the mafia, who protects and enriches himself through international organized crime networks.
A specific case that is mentioned is that of Luftar Hysa, sanctioned on November 13 by the US Treasury Department. They are accused of using businesses in Mexico, including gambling establishments and restaurants, to launder income generated from drug trafficking. However, even after this step by Washington, there has been no reaction from the Albanian authorities in Tirana. Silence speaks volumes.
The Washington Examiner describes Albania as a "mafia state" that provides a safe haven for international criminals. A country that is officially part of NATO and a US ally, but which has in reality allowed the construction of a parallel criminal economy, linked to transnational drug networks from Latin America to Europe.
The article ends with a clear warning: if Edi Rama does not change course and begin to face the reality of his criminal alliances, the US will be forced to react. Trump, it is said, must send him a firm message: either with the law and the fight against cartels, or face the consequences. /Pamphlet
