In a process announced for weeks as formal and without real competition, Sali Berisha appeared today at the Democratic Party headquarters to vote... for himself.
Alone in the race for the leadership of the DP, after five candidates were disqualified from the process, Berisha described the vote as exemplary and democratic.
Accompanied by his wife, Liri Berisha, the leader of the Democrats appeared convinced that the process represented the will of the membership, even though the elections are taking place without an alternative to him.
"I greet all the democrats who have voted so far throughout Albania, in an exemplary process, in which they express their will for the president or against him in the most democratic way. I invite the democrats to fulfill this important statutory obligation, towards a more democratic process that exists in all modern, European parties. In part of them, because they are a minority. I guarantee that I will fulfill my obligations towards their positions with great dedication," said Berisha.
But as the voting process took place without political rivals on the ballot, Berisha reserved direct attacks for former MP Ervin Salianji. The latter had earlier published several ballots where Democratic members had written his name, in a symbolic form of opposition to the single race.
Without mentioning his name directly, Berisha labeled Salianji as connected to the underworld, further exacerbating the conflict within the democratic camp.
"I believe that the insinuations of a representative of the criminal world cannot taint this most democratic process in Albania. Representatives of the criminal world will never have a place in this party. Our separation from the criminal world is a separation of life and death, no one can think of considering power in this party, the power of crime. Zero ," said Berisha.
