The failure of the meeting for the 'elector', Gjekmarkaj: Why Alibeaj

After the "failure" of the first meeting of the Electoral Reform Commission, the deputy of the Democratic Party, Agron Gjekmarkaj, said that the majority must face the real opposition and Alibeaj cannot be the co-chairman, as long as he does not have the full confidence of the opposition.

In his answer, the General Secretary of the Socialist Party, Blendi Klosi, said that the opposition is welcome with any kind of proposal for changes in the Electoral Reform.

Conversation between them:

Klosi: What the colleagues had chosen today was the occupation of our chairs. I left because we are not in parliament, neither to confront nor to try to convince them about the path they have chosen. For the citizens, it was one less day, out of the very few days left from the Electoral Reform. The constitutional obligation is to make changes in the electoral law. In this commission, the position of the majority is not enough, but it is comprehensive. The decisions of that commission must be agreed upon.

Gjekmarkaj: Why didn't you insist on alternatives. We have to limit what is normal in a democratic country. Normality is the implementation of the constitution, the rights of the deputy, the government should not define what the opposition is, the competition should be with the real opponent. It is important who the SP faces tomorrow in the elections.

Klosi: We will face the problems of the citizens.

Gjekmarkaj: You will face the real opponent. I have nothing against Alibeaj, but he cannot be the co-leader, because he does not have the confidence of the majority of the opposition. The impasse where the political court has entered, the government. We are rational, the real opponent must be respected and with him, you make the rules of the game.

Klosi: I agree with what Mr. Gjekmarkaj said. In reality, it is different, that commission is not bipartisan but comprehensive, the whole group can come to attend the meetings, the problem is not determined by the co-chairman. The decision-making of the commission is not final, it is a table or an atmosphere when the debates are discussed, the issues in detail when it comes to the plenary session, things have been discussed and debated. The forces that want to appear in the campaign have less than 100 days left from the opportunity to change the Electoral Code. The Electoral Code does not allow changes before the elections. A day lost today. Was it lost for the benefit of groups that show they are strong, I do not interfere nor is it my business. We don't choose the opponent, we think like election day is tomorrow. This is the reality.

Gjekmarkaj: I must remind Mr. Klosi that since September, Bardhi has asked to discuss the electoral reform and be the appointed representative, just like the SP has Mr. Gjiknuri. Once they said wait a few days, now we have passed into the field of political banality where an artificial quarrel is ignited. I understand the opponent has the right to do it, but it is a right that deserves the reaction of the elites.

Gjekmarkaj: It is too late for DP to change. The SP can reject the proposals, maybe it will go to the elections with this code, but the DP has the obligation to come up with an alternative, how does it think about the electoral reform, what are the offers that lead Albania towards free and fair elections.

We have no conditions for the Electoral Reform commission, but to go ahead and reach an agreement. If a group of MPs has presented proposals it is a very good thing. Everyone brings their own changes, but it is important to have an agreement accepted by the parties. This is not the electoral system that creates favors. A group decided to occupy the chairs, today they did not turn them upside down. We have no deviation from the principle that that commission is open to any proposal, this is the history, this is how it has always happened. These last 100 days that are left are too few to change the electoral code, the vote of immigrants, the possibility of electronic voting, some things that need to be considered, discussed and found a compromise. If there are proposals, as the DP has made them official, they will be discussed. In this case, we cannot veto, SP has only 74 votes. This is the third system.

Gjekmarkaj: PD did not present any condition, only to have the opportunity to participate as it is legally and ethically, but it is not becoming possible.
