Former Democratic Party MP Ervin Salianji declared that he will submit the documentation to run for the leadership of the Democratic Party in the May 23 elections, despite his reservations about the process.
Asked if he would apply, he replied that "I will file everything that is requested, despite the fact that it is clearly a farce."
Salianji has raised accusations against the way the criteria for candidacy were established, calling them unfair and biased.
He also added that the leader of the Democrat Party, Sali Berisha, is afraid to face this race. The former MP warned that he will not recognize the process if his candidacy is rejected.
"A document that is published only a few hours after the deadline. Without electoral lists, without equal time, etc. This is usurpation through farce, but clearly also Sali Berisha's fear of confrontation," he said.
Asked what he would do in this case, he stated that "I will not recognize it as a process, as it is usurpation."
Salijanj's reaction comes after the Democratic Party published the criteria for candidacy just 24 hours before the deadline. According to these rules, convicted persons cannot be part of the race, which excludes him from running.
The DP had previously announced the ban on Salijanj from running, citing that he had self-excluded himself, but after today's announcement, their mission has been achieved.
"The criteria for candidates for Chairman of the DPA are: 1-Member of the Democratic Party, a figure with a very high public and political profile, with at least 10 years of political and electoral engagement in the Democratic Party. 2- To have leadership experience at the national/regional level in the political battles of the Democratic Party, for civic and political causes. 3- To meet the eligibility criteria according to Law No. 138/2015 "On guaranteeing the integrity of persons who are elected, appointed or exercise public functions", the announcement states.
