International Volunteer Day, Rama: Charity is discipline, Albania accepted

Prime Minister Edi Rama, in his speech during an event on the International Volunteer Day, said that charity is not a gesture, but a discipline. The head of government said that untrained hope remains fragile and cannot take you far. Speaking about charity, Rama emphasized that it is often misunderstood as an act of giving something that you do not need, but in fact it has a much deeper dimension.

"I would like to say a few words about hope and charity, hope must be trained. Hope is neither a lucky star above our heads nor a vague promise that tomorrow will be better than today. Hope is a muscle and like any muscle it only grows when trained and strengthens only when exposed to difficulties and obstacles. Therefore, hope when untrained is fragile and does not take you far. Trained hope is the force that drives us forward in search of what we want to achieve for ourselves and for others. Charity is misunderstood and many imagine it as an act of giving something that is not needed, but I believe that true charity is not generosity for what you have in excess, but it is generosity with yourself.

I heard from my grandmother that it is said 'blessed is he who gives and not he who receives' and charity is a decision to open oneself to the other and not to see him as a stranger and as a burden when he is in difficulty but as a mirror when the measure of humanity that you have is reflected. Charity is not a gesture, it is discipline, therefore charity without hope turns into an offense. It is offensive to everyone when someone throws something at someone who has extended a hand and does not even look back , "said Rama.

The Prime Minister also focused on the sheltering of Afghans in Albania, emphasizing that our country became an example of solidarity at a time when many allied countries were hesitant to accept them. The Prime Minister added that the decision to accept them was not simply a humanitarian act, but a moral stance that shows the true weight of Albania as a NATO member country.

"I want to dwell on that incident regarding the Afghans. It was a moment when America left behind all those who had in fact brought them out of the darkness with a great promise that with the arrival of America and NATO in Afghanistan, everything would change in their lives. And suddenly, in the blink of an eye, everything was over for those people and there I saw the other America and the strength of that country when people from the most diverse backgrounds, who in their lives live in different camps and in different worlds, came together.

"We got the strangest phone calls asking for help from Albania because we became the only country that opened the doors to Afghans who were too Muslim to be welcome in many other NATO countries or were not that white. We did that. Our country is one of the smallest NATO countries and it could not be as small as the spirit of those who may be richer and bigger than us ," Rama said.
