The Minister of State for Local Government, Ervin Demo, held a meeting with the mayors of Austrian municipalities, where the focus of discussions was the European integration process, territorial reform and the strengthening of local government in Albania.
During his speech, Demo emphasized the importance of preparing municipalities for the challenges associated with the European Union accession process. He also focused on cooperation with international partners to build administrative capacities, appreciating the support provided by Swedish partners in establishing the new Academy for Local Government.
The Minister also recalled the changes that the territorial organization in Albania has undergone over the years, emphasizing that the administrative reform has brought important transformations in the structure of local government.
"We are very proud to have established the new Academy with the help of partners, especially Swedish partners. EU programs are great. Our objective is to be in the EU by 2030. It is important that municipalities do a good job in facing the challenges that lie ahead. When we talk about territorial reform, Albania has moved to different local government structures. We were 26 municipalities, 26 centers, after '91 they went to 31 and in 2014 this number went to 61", said Demo.
