Kathimirini newspaper writes that the newly elected Mayor of Himara has been in custody for months and as a result has not been able to take the oath. The Greek authorities state that this process is politically motivated because Albania has violated the right to a fair trial and the presumption of innocence.

Diplomatic editor Vassilis Nedos, referring to the internal discussions in the Greek government after the failure in the talks with the Albanian counterparts, points out that at the beginning of December at the meeting of the European Council, Prime Minister Mitsotakis can veto the freezing of financial aid to Albania. Even deputy EC president Margaritis Schinas said on Thessaloniki Radio about this issue that Albania will have consequences.

"I have made it clear to Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi, as the person responsible for the enlargement of the EU, that if the issue is not resolved, the integration process of Albania should not continue. The ban of Mr. Beleri constitutes a violation of the presumption of innocence because it prevents a democratically elected representative of the Greek ethnic minority in Albania from being sworn in and exercising his office.

As a longtime supporter of Albania's European perspective, I hope that the Albanian authorities will take concrete steps to quickly resolve the issue. If this does not happen, I see a serious risk that this issue will negatively affect the overall assessment of Albania's progress and commitment on the right path to becoming a full member of the EU.", he said.

The Special Prosecutor's Office (SPAK) earlier closed the investigations in charge of Beler, taking the file for trial before the Special Court of First Instance for Corruption.

SPAK points out that, from the analysis, it is proven beyond any reasonable doubt that the defendant Beleri offered the citizen Arsen Rama the monetary sum of 50 Euros for every person Arseni would find, who would vote for Beleri as a candidate for president of Himar Municipality, in the local elections on May 14.

Meanwhile, Arsen Rama himself has promised citizens the amount of 300 Euro as a reward for the service he would perform.

Beleri gave the monetary sums to Rama through the other defendant Pandeli Kokaveshi, who was his accomplice in the commission of this corrupt act.

The latter gave Rama eight 5,000 Lek banknotes for eight people who would vote in favor of Beler.

In the specific case, the defendants have committed the criminal offense with illegal active actions in two forms, such as through the promise and offering of monetary sums.
