Fatos Nano, former prime minister and historic leader of the Socialist Party, passed away this Friday at the age of 73. With his death, an important chapter in the history of pluralistic Albania closes.
Nano passed away after lung health problems, leaving behind his family, friends and numerous collaborators. His first wife, Rexhina Nano, who remained by his side for decades and during his imprisonment in the 1990s, was reportedly by his side until his final days.
Luan Rama, the Albanian writer in France, expressed his condolences, recalling Rexhina's devotion to Fatosi "from the time of prison until her last breath."
"Condolences to Rexhina, who was not separated from his imprisonment in the first years of the transition until the last days of his life. Condolences to the entire family," he writes.
Nano had lived for years between Austria and Albania with his second wife, Xhoana Nano. He remains a key figure in the country's political history, as the founder and "architect" of the modern Socialist Party.
