On October 3, 2023, the editor of Pamfleti, Gjergj Zefi, was brutally attacked near the offices of the "Pamfleti" editorial office in downtown Tirana. The perpetrators of this attack were members of the notorious "Çopja" gang of Elbasan, a structured criminal group that has operated in the shadows for years, committing crimes on demand and always managing to escape justice.
At the head of this criminal group are names such as Endri Çopja, Klejdi (Klaus) Çopja, Renato Bodurri and Shkëlzen Hasanpapaj. According to SHISH data and SPAK investigations, these individuals are charged with assassinations, murders, injuries, drug trafficking and extortion. Renato Bodurri, disguised as a manager at the "Living Bar" bar in Elbasan, has served as a "dice" to carry out crimes on demand. He is the same person whose car was used to drive away the assassins who physically attacked journalist Gjergj Zefi with iron bars behind his back.
But the biggest scandal lies not in the criminal act, but in the protection that these individuals enjoy from politics and oligarchs. SPAK, despite having clear information about the involvement of Bodurri and others, has not included him in the list of those arrested. Such inaction raises strong doubts about the impact of crime on Albanian justice institutions.
Investigations show that the “Çopja” group has direct support from the well-known oligarch, Gjergj Luca . Sources from the investigation confirm that this group was paid by Luca to silence journalists critical of him. Luca, known for his strong ties to Edi Rama and criminal circles, appears to have used the Elbasan gang as a tool to eliminate his critics and opponents.
But Luca does not act alone. He has the support of Sokol Sanxhatari , the person who is suspected of being the bridge between him and the “Çopja” group to execute the attack on journalist Zefi. This is a pure example of how the oligarchy uses organized crime to protect its interests and to intimidate anyone who dares to expose the truth.
More worrying is the involvement of politics in this criminal network. Former Prime Minister Sali Berisha has publicly denounced that the Minister of State for Parliamentary Relations, Taulant Balla , received orders from the gangs to release Endri Çopjan and Argel Lulaj, two people who had carried out the TNT attack on Lulzim Kulla in Shkodër. According to Berisha, Balla used prosecutor Vath Staka to achieve their release.
Another shocking scandal is the arrest of former judge Pajtime Fetahu , who ordered the murder of journalist Saimir Kodra . The crime was allegedly committed by the “Çopja” gang, whom she had recruited through communications made on SkyECC. This proves once again how justice and organized crime have become one body, where corrupt judges order murders, while politicians and oligarchs support them.
The fact that a criminal group like “Çopja” manages to operate unscathed, with open support from oligarchs and politics, is a clear signal that Albania is a country gripped by crime. Journalists, citizens and activists are no longer safe, as crime knows no borders. The silence of institutions is the strongest proof of the degradation of the state and the failure of justice reform.
This situation cannot continue! Justice must wake up and act, otherwise crime will continue to dictate the fate of Albania, turning it into a free play ground for oligarchs and their gangs.
