The interview given by Prime Minister Edi Rama about "Kathimerini" did not satisfy the Greeks at all. Rama gave signals that he will not replace Beleri if he does not take the oath within 30 days, as the law stipulates, making it clear that he can wait for the final decision from the court.
But for Athens, none of this matters, as they want Beleri to take office as soon as possible. The statement was made by Greek government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis.
" The attitude of the Greek government from the first moment has been firm and non-negotiable on this issue. Fredi Beleris is a legally elected mayor, who must take the oath after this decision of the citizens. And this is the reason why we ask Albania to respect the basic rules of the rule of law, the basic European rules, and we expect actions ," he said.
In the interview, the Prime Minister was soft towards the Greeks, but it seems that the latter do not negotiate. Rama said that he has commissioned lawyers to draw up an opinion on how to act.
" According to our law, if an elected person does not appear to be sworn in for any reason, it is not defined, so when he does not appear to be sworn in within 90 days, it is up to the government to act by dismissing the person and deciding a caretaker in office until new elections are held, which are announced by the President. I have asked my lawyers to prepare an opinion and I don't know what it will be. My instinct or my first reaction is that, perhaps, we will have to wait for the judicial process, until it is proven whether he is guilty or innocent ", said Mr. Rama.
Today there was also an interview by Fredi Beleri, who strongly attacked Rama. According to him, it was a self-indulgent interview. He also said that Rama has gone out 4 times in 12 days to talk about his arrest.
