Pilgrimages, masses and protocol announcements show that autocephaly remains an illusion, while Greek influence continues to dominate...
Even with the arrival of an Albanian archbishop at its head, the Albanian Orthodox Church is not managing to break away from Hellenism, a legacy of the government of Anastasios Janullatos. This Greek influence continues to be present in almost all aspects of the Church's activity, hindering the realization of autocephaly, which would mean the complete independence of the Albanian Church.
This is clearly evident in the official and protocol announcements of the Church. During the summer months, Albania has been visited by numerous groups of pilgrims from Greece, who have carried out various activities, including a pilgrimage to the tomb of Anastasios Janullatos, transforming him into a symbolic saint. These groups have been received by Archbishop Fatmir Pelushi, also known as Monsignor Joani, together with clergy of the Greek Church.

The official announcement continues to use chauvinistic language, referring to southern Albania as “Vorio-Epirus,” a term used by the official website of the Greek Church. According to it, the five-day pilgrimage included the places where Saint Cosmas lived, as well as holy sites in Northern Epirus, including Saint Saranda, Gjirokastra, the Monastery of Saint Cosmas, Korça, Berat, and Tirana.
During the pilgrimage, the Metropolitan of Dhimiti and Almiros, Mr. Ignati, celebrated mass in honor of those who fell on the Saranda front, the late Metropolitan of Gjirokastra, Mr. Dhimitri, as well as the blessed Archbishop of Albania, Mr. Anastasi, at the Cathedral of the Resurrection in Tirana. During the cultural activities at the Cathedral of Tirana, youth groups from Albania and Greece sang songs in the Greek language.
In the Greek announcement, the Albanian archbishop is referred to as Mr. Ioannis, respecting the Greek transliteration, and not as Joani. Metropolitan Ignati stated: “With emotion we stood at the grave of the blessed Archbishop Anastasios, a hierarch who sealed the rebirth of Orthodoxy in your country. We pray for you and the Church of Albania and will always be a helper and supporter in your work.”
The pilgrims also visited Berat (Veratio), where they toured the historic churches together with the Metropolitan of Veratio, Avloni and Kanini, Mr. Astios, and were received at the Municipality of Dropoli and Pogoni by the Mayor, Mr. Dimitrios Tolis. Autocephaly remains an unfulfilled promise, while Hellenism continues to sow its influence in every corner of the temple and every official activity./ Pamphlet
