Prime Minister Edi Rama held a joint conference with the President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, who recently arrived in Tirana.
During his speech, Rama said that all chapters will be opened within this year and negotiations will be closed within 2027.
"Good evening, President of the EC, of course this is a special pleasure for us, personally it is a pleasure to meet again with the President, who is a dear and very wise friend. Thank you very much, we are here today, after the President has visited the entire region, stopped in Tirana, tomorrow he will be present at the summit. We discussed both aspects that connect us with the EC and the EU, about the aspect of our path towards membership. Today, Albania is officially at the negotiating table, we aim to open the chapters within the year. The joint plan with the EC and supported by the member states, is to manage to close the negotiations in 2027. It is a very ambitious plan ," said Rama.
Rama further invited all Balkan countries and their leaders not to miss this chance that the EU is giving them to become part of it.
"I take this opportunity to invite all colleagues in the region not to miss this moment that history has brought to our doorstep. The EU is very keen to accept new members based on merit. Another topic of the meeting is the overall progress of the region, and this is also related to the reason why the EU is willing to accept new members. Rama did not spare jokes with Federica Mogherini, who was also in the hall, to whom he said he does not understand why she is not applying for an Albanian passport.
"The last thing is that I am glad that we have a dear friend here, Federica Mogerini, or rather a former friend, because she is now a captain from Italy. I don't understand why she hasn't applied for a European passport, she is just waiting for an excuse to see Albania's European passport ," said Rama.
