Dumani leaves in December, what will happen to the anti-corruption fight?
The heat seems to be leaving with August, and September will bring back the spotlight on the Special Prosecution Office.
As Edi Rama is expected to emerge with a completely new government, many names will not sleep well. The clock has started to tick backwards for Altin Dumani, who seems to have only 4 months to prove that SPAK operates without any kind of political pressure or influence.
Despite international calls and interventions, the majority seems to be making it clear that there is no legal change to enable Altin Dumani to be re-nominated as head of SPAK or any other prosecutor for another term. That said, at the end of December Altin Dumani will have to hand over his duties and dark clouds are expected to cover SPAK thereafter.
Evil mouths say that Rama this time will not allow what happened 4 years ago when Dumani was elected, that is, he surrendered in the face of pressure from Yuri Kim. This time, the intention is to put a junior member of the government at the head of SPAK. This is also due to the withdrawal of the US, as the embassy seems to no longer be interfering with internal affairs. Babloku will use this calm to put one of his loyalists there.
This means that Dumani has only 4 months to bring the files in his hands to a conclusion. There are over 700-800 files that prosecutors have under investigation, but some of them are for high-ranking officials, including MPs, former ministers, mayors and high-level directors. There is even talk of people close to Rama who are at risk.
After May 11, it seemed as if SPAK withdrew. The strong victory of the SP seems to have demoralized the prosecutors to some extent. This was followed by the withdrawal of American experts (they have now returned). But Dumani himself has declared in recent appearances that whoever has violated the law will be punished.
Autumn seems to be decisive. The holidays are over and now we will see if SPAK will bring the sensational files to the end, since from January 2026 it is not known what the fate of SPAK will be.
