Freeing up public spaces, Rama: 140 thousand square meters have been freed up in
Prime Minister Edi Rama

Prime Minister Edi Rama declared that the action to free up public spaces will continue throughout the country, describing it as a long-term process and not a temporary initiative.

In the "Flasim" podcast, he said that so far, about 140 thousand square meters of public space have been freed up in Tirana alone.

According to Rama, this process faces difficulties due to a mentality rooted over the years regarding the use of shared spaces. He emphasized that it is a continuous effort to establish new rules in the use of these spaces.

Rama stated that the interventions are not limited to the capital, but are also extending to rural areas and areas with tourist potential, where, according to him, unauthorized construction and inert material deposits have been found.

Rama announced that one of the main principles expected to be implemented is the 70:30 ratio, where 70% of the space will remain for the public and the community, while the remaining part can be used for private activities.

"The liberation of public spaces and the imposition of a new status of public space continues, continues, continues with persistence. It is not easy. It is a struggle with a deeply rooted mentality, apparently even deeper than these 30 or so years. Apparently, combined with the mentality of before the time when public spaces were the spaces of a single state in a so-called dictatorship of the proletariat, where the proletarians had everything in words and had everything together, but had absolutely nothing.

Meanwhile, the process, as I said at the beginning, after we won the fourth mandate, is not a temporary process, it is not an action of one week, one month, two months, but it is a continuous, continuous, continuous commitment to restore order in the use of common spaces.

In Tirana alone, where many problems related to the occupation of public spaces have been identified, 140 thousand square meters have been freed, which is not a small amount, while in areas such as, for example, the area here in the center, very strong interventions have been undertaken to ensure the liberation of public spaces.

What is important to say is that at the same time we are also expanding into rural residential areas, we are also expanding into areas that, of course, and precisely because they are areas of tourist interest, cannot be points where inert materials are dumped and meaningless buildings are erected without permission, and in parallel we are moving forward with new models that will replace the old ones based on studies conducted by architects and based on the work done by the municipality, as well as finalizing the general regulation on the basis of which then all those who operate in the enterprise related to the use of public space will have a clear idea of where their boundaries are.

And in fact, the simple principle will be 70 to 30% of a space, where 70% will always be for the public, it will always be for the community, it will always be for those who walk,"  Rama said.
