Analyst Mentor Nazarko has stated that the former leader of the Democratic Party, Lulzim Basha, was close to being declared "non grata" by the United States of America.
Invited to journalist Andrea Danglli's "Off the Record" show on A2 CNN, Nazarko said that Basha has experienced strong international and domestic pressure, especially during the period of political crisis and the debate over the opposition's participation in local elections.
According to him, internationals have opposed the withdrawal of opposition candidates from the elections, considering it a destabilizing scenario for the region.
"We are trying to attribute the 'McGonigal' case to Berisha. In fact, it is linked to Basha. Mr. Basha was ready to be declared 'non grata' by the US," said Nazarko.
He added that the former head of the DP was warned directly by former US official Matthew Palmer at the moment when the opposition was discussing withdrawing from the local elections.
According to Nazarko, the international message was that such a boycott would be seen as a "photocopy of the Serbian opposition's script" and could contribute to the destabilization of the Balkans, at a time when the US was engaged in the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue process.
"Basha has suffered as well. He has not been anywhere near prison, but he has suffered strong international pressure," the analyst stated.

At the moment of the withdrawal of candidates from the local elections, he was directly threatened by Palmer. The message was made public that 'you should not withdraw candidates because this is a destabilizing scenario for the Balkans. It is a photocopy of the Serbian opposition's scenario and risks spreading throughout the Balkans at a time when the US had undertaken a reconciliation initiative between Kosovo and Serbia.
