Lulzim Basha will compete against Gjergji Hani in the July 29 race for the head of the DP.
The special election committee of the DP chairman has closed the procedure of collecting candidacies and there were only two names that showed interest.
Gjergji Hani is a politically persecuted person. He was convicted at the age of 16 for attempting to escape on the charge of "Treason to the Fatherland". He is then sentenced for "Treason against the motherland and agitation and propaganda". He served his sentence in Qafë-Bar prison. Gjergj Hani was only 16 years old when he had the courage to cross the border alone.
Hani, in an interview a few days ago, also spoke about the reasons for running. " I started from a sense of obligation not only to my experience, but also to the memory of many of those who have been part of my life and are no longer here today. We did not expect that there would be an opposition in such a state. It is the most difficult and the best moment for the Albanian right to be able to overcome it and be reborn for what it is. My point of view is conservative !", he said.
But his entry into the race seems to be formal. Lulzim Basha has made it clear that he is seeking the return to the head of the party, although we have a division of it now into 3 parts. Berisha's group does not mention this issue because they claim to be the official PD. Meanwhile, some deputies have come out against Basha's candidacy. It remains to be seen how the July 29 process will go now.
