Mamdani challenged the elites and won. What about you?

Shkruar nga Pamfleti

Zohran Mamdani's victory and two words for the young oppositionists in Albania: It doesn't matter if Mamdani is left or right. It doesn't matter if he is extremist or reformist, Muslim or Christian, Buddhist or atheist. It doesn't matter if he stands for or against Israel and Palestine, if he belongs to a liberal ideology or a radical vision. Political labels did not lead him to victory in New York. The victory came because he took a risk and entered a battle that no one guaranteed him.

Mamdani challenged the elites and won. What about you?

Zohran Mamdani did not win the New York mayoral race because he belonged to an ideological camp or because he found an open window. He did it because he entered a battle that most people do not dare to enter. He entered the Democratic Party primaries without waiting for permission from the old structures and without accepting the hierarchy that decides who is next. There was no luxury in that race. There were rivals who were not random. On his left side stood Andrew Cuomo, the former governor of New York, a figure who had run the party apparatus for years and knew every nook and cranny of the system. Cuomo entered the race as the return of the establishment, with a network of people and interests that do not lose elections easily and who know how to block a new person who comes in without his blessing. Mamdani did not retreat. He knew that victory is not measured by the reputation of the opponent. He measures it by the ability to face it. And he faced it.

After winning the primary, he found himself in a political scheme that no new candidate had seen in recent decades. The federal government, led by Donald Trump, did not allow this race to remain a purely local issue. Trump saw Mamdani's campaign as a national political threat and intervened by openly attacking him in his public appearances. He called his voters stupid and labeled Mamdani as a man who, according to him, represented ideas that would destroy the city. Trump decided to support the Republican candidate, but in the meantime, the political structures behind him also financed Cuomo's return as an independent candidate. The goal was clear. To split the vote. To isolate the young man who came without roots in the system. To create a duel between two old men who know how to control power. Mamdani refused to sign this game.

Political didn't happen in television studios where debates barely distract from self-interest monologues. He didn't waste time analyzing every poll. He built the ground. He transformed the energy of voter disillusionment into organized action.

In Albania, politics does not accept courage. It demands submission. Whoever enters this world quickly learns the basic rule of the game: Don't touch the leader. Don't touch the structure. Don't touch the list. Stay within the frame and wait. Wait for someone to leave, wait for someone to call you, wait for someone to give you the right to speak. This is not politics. This is a queue. A queue that never ends.

Meanwhile, the rhetoric of the Albanian opposition soars, but its feet remain planted in the television studio. They criticize the government, but cannot touch the man who is squeezing their necks within the party. They talk about democracy, but they start every sentence with the fear of disturbing the peace. They spend energy on showing off, not on building. They spend hours commenting on the victories of others, while never entering into their own test. Instead of an idea of their own, they recite texts written from behind the scenes. They hide behind ready-made speeches prepared for them by their political fathers, behaving as spokesmen for a structure that never allows for an independent voice.

It doesn't matter if Zohran Mamdani is left or right. It doesn't matter if he is extremist or reformist, Muslim or Christian, Buddhist or atheist. It doesn't matter if he stands for or against Israel and Palestine, if he belongs to a liberal ideology or a radical vision. Political labels did not lead him to victory in New York. Victory came because he took a risk and entered a battle that no one guaranteed him. He made the decision to challenge the structures, to confront the names that were called untouchable and not to ask for permission to exist politically. He saw politics as action and not as waiting. He saw the field as a place to try out an idea and not a screen where someone else's rhetoric is recited.

And this is the real test. Not ideology. Not speeches. Not labels. The question is only one: does one dare to confront the structure that holds them hostage. Mamdani challenged his party elites, challenged the city establishment, and even challenged a sitting president. He stood up to the apparatus that wanted to silence him without letting him speak. He didn't wait his turn. He broke the line.

But you, who talk about change every day and wait patiently for your turn, what will you really do when the time comes to act?
