The leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, reacted immediately after the approval in the Assembly of the draft law on gender equality, which passed with 77 votes in favor.
In a statement to the media outside Parliament, Berisha described the process as "illegal and formal", accusing the majority of a lack of debate and violation of parliamentary rules.
" They decided it without debate, terrified by their vote and stance. In fact, the Parliament is merely formal, because none of its basic rules are being respected ," said Berisha.
He added that the law, according to him, "pave the way for the installation of a post-Marxist ideology", which he described as "the most dangerous of modern times".
" It was a moment to debate widely about freedom, which is being replaced by post-Marxist ideology. Now the Albanian citizens will have the floor. The DP is absolutely against any gender discrimination and has voted for one of the best laws in this field. But today's law overturns the legal order of Albania, the Constitution, codes and other laws of the country ," Berisha declared.
The debate over the new gender equality law has also involved other political and social figures, with part of the opposition strongly opposing it, considering it a "danger to traditional values", while the majority supports it as a step towards European standards of rights and representation.
