Prime Minister Edi Rama, in his podcast "Flasim", spoke about the Constitutional Court's decision regarding the mayor of Tirana, Erjon Veliaj.
According to Rama, the decision was a scandal, as Tirana cannot be left behind by a leader.
Rama said that after this decision, the Constitutional Court should release the mayor and allow him to be tried at liberty so that he can continue his work, while rejecting all rumors regarding the reasons that led the government and the Socialist Party to the decision to dismiss Veliaj.
"There are some logical consequences from this decision that I want to underline again, after I have expressed it. As it seems and it is not the first time, I have not seized all the powers, it is a good thing that those who oppose it should also accept not on the truths, but on the untruths. Tirana will not have elections until 2027 and the Constitutional Court thinks that and the Constitutional Court thinks that the imprisoned mayor of Tirana cannot leave except by election, then here we are faced with a double disproportion, of keeping him in prison to the detriment of his freedoms and constitutional rights as a person and as elected to lead the city, but also the disproportion to the detriment of the constitutional right of the people of the capital to be served by their elected or not
Any normal person who does not see in the Constitutional Court's position a blind stance against the government to the great detriment of Tirana, but a firm principled stance, cannot help but expect that with the same principle, when judging his detention, the Constitutional Court will return Erion Veliaj to duty, to continue the judicial process in a free state or not. This is also the most normal thing. The first and second are certain, the third remains to be seen.
Whatever has been said, has not told the truth regarding the reason for the dismissal of the mayor by the government, as a result of the decision taken by the SP in the Municipal Council. The truth is simple, Tirana must be led, Tirana cannot be a headless body, the capital of Albania needs its own elected leader. So whoever has the power to help resolve this absurd impasse, must remember that beyond conspiracy theories, the capital cannot be treated as an orphan for years. This is a scandal, a scandal for which the citizens of Tirana pay a cost", said Rama.
The Constitutional Court ruled in favor of Erion Veliaj, keeping him in office as mayor of Tirana. With a decision of 5 votes in favor and 3 against, the Constitutional Court overturned the government's decision to dismiss him on November 3 and annulled President Barjam Begaj's decree calling elections in Tirana. The Constitutional Court argued that Veliaj was not questioned, denying him due process. It also emphasizes that a mayor can only be dismissed under Article 115 of the Fundamental Law for a serious violation.

GjK nuk amnistoi K/bashkiakun e Tiranes por vleresoi si te parregullt dhe jo ne perputhje ligjore Kushtetuese proceduren e shkarkimit te tij. Per me teper Presidenti ne dijeni te padise se K/bashkiakut, sipas garancise juridike, nuk duhej te emetonte vendimin deri ne momentin qe do te shprehej GjK. Ketu nuk duhet te bejme konfuzion. GjK nuk ka per detyrim dhe komptence se cfare do te behet me tej me qeverisjen e Bashkise se Tiranes. As me fatin e K/bashkiakut. Deri ketu e ka hapin. Keto ngerce duhet te parashikohen ne ligjet per zgjedhjet dhe pushtetin vendor se si duhen zgjidhur. Dhe ligjet i ben Kuvendi… Cdo zgjidhje subjektive extraligjore apo extraproceduriale do t’i ngateronte me keq situatat. Personalisht edhe une mendoj se Bashkia e Tiranes ka nevoje per nje drejtim te ri per qytetaret dhe jo per korrupsionin. Por deshira eshte deshire dhe vetem zbatimi i ligjit garanton stabilitet dhe perspektive pozitive. Perndryshe krijohet kaos, e drejta nuk garantohet dhe ujku mjegull do…
