The leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, participated this Thursday in the commemorative ceremony of the 35th anniversary of the April 2, 1991 massacre in Shkodra, in honor of the four martyrs killed.
During his speech, Berisha emphasized that this date represents the beginning of the revolt against what he described as an electoral farce, underlining that the fallen sacrificed their lives for freedom and a free vote.
"Today, on the 35th anniversary of the martyrdom on April 2, 1991 of four distinguished sons, exemplary citizens of this city, we bow with the greatest respect, with the most boundless gratitude before the work of Arben Broci, founder of the Democratic Party and member of the leadership of this party, founder of political pluralism in Albania, exemplary, brave and courageous student.
We bow with the greatest respect before the immortal work of Bujar Bishanaku, Nazmir Kryeziu, Besnik Ceka, exemplary citizens, exemplary sons of this city, brave, courageous people who sacrificed their lives for the highest values that we believe in.
Dear friends, 35 years ago, just two days after the end of the electoral farce, Shkodra high school students interrupted classes and sat on their bags in one of the most civilized, most peaceful forms of protest.
They protested in deep despair because the last communist dictator in Europe, his party, and the pluralistic elections after almost half a century, turned them into an electoral farce. Their disappointment was immense, as was their anger and despair.
So they went out in protest, sat in front of the crime palace, sat in front of the crime party headquarters, and numerous volleys of Kalashnikovs and machine guns were fired at them.
"They fell in this square to remain forever alive in our hearts, to always be honored by those who honor the free vote and freedom," Berisha said.
