The Democratic Party requested an interpellation with the Minister of Interior, Besfort Lamallari, focusing the debate on the integrity of the State Police and the impact of cases of its employees' involvement in criminal activity.
MP Klevis Balliu stated that the phenomenon is not a political issue, but a problem that affects security. He mentioned several cases of former officers involved in drug trafficking and in collaboration with criminal groups, as well as the episode of the assassination in Rinas where, according to him, an AMP agent was in the vehicle with Gilmando Dani.
Balliu said that the situation is also reflected in international reports.
“ The incrimination of the police is not a political accusation, but a fact known not only by the Albanian public opinion but also by international partners. Here, not only an institution is violated, but the security of every citizen and national security. The European Commission's Enlargement Report for Albania for 2025 emphasizes that: “Despite the efforts undertaken, the State Police continues to be deeply exposed to corruption. The process of transitional and periodic evaluation of police employees (“police vetting”), as well as the integrity verification process have continued, but their impact remains limited ,” he said.
The Democrat MP further added that the report also highlights cases of pressure on journalists and the involvement of officials or police officers in these episodes.
" Cases of intimidation and threats against journalists have also become more visible, including cases involving senior state officials or police officers, especially against investigative journalists and women journalists ," said the DP MP.
Referring to specific cases, Balliu stated that "you have the case of Oltion Bistri, Henrigert Mitri, which clearly show how individuals at high levels of the police have not only been involved in drug trafficking, but have facilitated the criminal acts of organizations."
The Minister of Interior opposed these positions and requested that the State Police not be involved in political clashes.
"The State Police is an organization of men, women, boys and girls, who face difficult work, on the front line of crime and lawlessness. We must be careful when using mud politics against an organization of the Albanian state. It does not mean that there are no problems, there are, there are cases of violations, there are individuals who have violated the police uniform, but the difference between a weak and a strong state lies here, one hides the problems and one addresses them with concrete measures ," he added.
Lamallari said that results have been recorded in public safety.
"An interesting piece of data comes from public safety, we have a 50% reduction in murders, a very worrying crime. Regarding the international community, Albania has been positively assessed by international reports, but I want to emphasize the fact that we have 38% more joint investigation teams and these have been made possible thanks to operations with EUROPOL," he said .
