European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has conveyed a strong message from Tirana regarding the country's path to EU integration.
At the joint press conference with Prime Minister Edi Rama, Von der Leyen said that Albanians love the EU and would vote in favor of membership.
"We reached an agreement in 2023. Next year we will abolish roaming fees. This is good for businesses and economies. Dear Edi, this is probably the strongest case, for enlargement it is not an economic or geopolitical issue, but people. Albania loves Europe. If a referendum were held today, 90 percent of Albanians would vote in favor. Everyone is with us and you. Everyone supports enlargement. Our new generation will live in a strong, secure and united EU. I wish you success in EU membership. I will support you," she said.
The President of the European Commission further assessed that Albania has made remarkable progress and at record speed on the path towards EU membership.
She added that the plan for our country to close membership negotiations in 2027 is an ambitious plan, but that this is appreciated.
Von der Leyen also said that Albania has made significant progress in key reforms, which she called the right move for our country to benefit from EU funds.
"Delighted to return to Albania and start my tour here. Albania is on the right path towards the EU. You have come a long way, you have made amazing progress at a record speed. We plan to open the final chapter this fall.
Your goal is to close negotiations by 2027, that is ambitious but we like ambition. The geopolitical moment is here and the war in Ukraine has reshaped it, making nations choose their place. Albania has made its choice, we are with you and you are fully aligned with the EU.
We act as one! You have made significant progress on key reforms.
"This is the way for Albania to access EU funds," said Ursula von der Leyen.
