Ilir Meta, President of the PL, who has been in prison for several months by decision of the Criminal Court, has stated that his foreign friends had also offered him political asylum in EU and NATO countries, but he had refused.
In an interview for 'Syri', Meta stated that foreign friends had warned him about the arrest.
"On October 21, 2023, I was in Austria for a medical checkup, the day Prof. Jamarbër Malltezi was kidnapped at the airport and SPAK attacked Sali Berisha, an interesting message came to the person who was with me from an associate of Charles McGonigail, who told him in short that this is the beginning, that the goal is Meta.
Likewise, I received many phone calls asking where I was, as news had spread that I was going to Hungary for political asylum.
Even a well-known and sympathetic opposition journalist told me not to come back until things calm down.
On Friday, I told them, I'll arrive in Rinas in the afternoon, tell everyone to wait for me.
Many friends, both well-known and international, not only warned me that they would arrest me, but also offered me support for political asylum in EU and NATO countries.
I thanked them very much for their care, but I told them that I could not realize the dream of the enemies of my country and their mercenaries, from Rama to all their tools in justice and everywhere.
If they had any evidence or criminal facts, no matter how minimal, they would never have staged that mafia kidnapping that will go down in the history of the Strasbourg Court as the most scandalous precedent to date.
They achieved some short-term goals, such as my extreme isolation, weakening the opposition's power in public, and intimidating many people, but in the long run, victory belongs to me and all patriots.
They hoped that through extreme isolation and attempts to corrupt some of the people who communicated with me, they would create evidence or criminal facts, as they did with their colleague Veliaj.
"Even the delays in the investigations launched by Dumani in December 2019 on the orders of Rama and McGonigal are deliberately pushing them to delay the trial on the merits, which will be open," Meta said.
