Prime Minister Edi Rama, at the meeting of the Socialist Party's National Assembly, has outlined the measures that the Government will take in the coming months regarding the price of fuel in Albania. Rama stated that for every day that the price of diesel goes above 220 lek per liter, the excise duty will be reduced by 20%.
Rama spoke about the establishment of a public entity that will monitor the fuel market in Albania, while stating that the Transparency Board has already been put into motion.
Speaking about the two new components that will be used by the Government, Rama said that they will be entrusted to the public company AlbTrace. In this context, the Prime Minister stated that through these components, the aim will be to combat tax evasion and oil smuggling, which the Head of Government identified as the main problems.
Explaining the two components, Rama said that one of them is the coloring of the oil. While the other component, according to the Prime Minister, is the tracking of the movement of the entire amount of oil that transits the territory of the Republic of Albania.
"The new plan will give us a meaningful overview at the end of this year, increasing revenues that will be used to increase pensions, salaries and investments, but also increasing price balancing, taking into account factors outside the crisis," Rama said.
Excerpt from Rama's statement on oil
The price of oil has not only increased, but is expected to increase further. For this, we have set in motion the Transparency Board, which we have used as you remember before, and we have also made a decision that for every day when the price jumps above the ceiling of 220 lek, there will be an immediate reduction of 20% in the oil excise tax.
So far, I don't see any impact on other prices, but fortunately we are in a situation where we have a debt and a deficit not only under control, but also at a level that allows us to have some space available in such moments to not leave anyone alone, considering first and foremost those who need it most.
To address once again every legitimate discussion and every proposal that comes from different avenues in the public environment, in this phase that no one knows how long it will last, we first have in mind pensioners and we will not do anything that will not go to provide for them first.
At the end of the day, if prices are impacted, pensioners are the ones who suffer the most from the impact on prices. On the other hand, we have stated before and are now in an advanced stage of shaping a state entity that will intervene in the oil market that will be created soon.
Work is underway on this and it will take on an activity that will range from guaranteeing the state reserve, to continuous market monitoring and, of course, ensuring supply to prevent any speculation with prices.
We are at the end of a process that will materialize in the next 1 or 2 months to introduce new components in the monitoring of the oil market, which will bring rapid results also in terms of oil evasion and smuggling, which continues to be present in the sector. One is the product of the AlbTrace company for a completely different oil indicator color, and the other is another product of the AlbTrace company for real-time tracking of all transit oil circulation.
